The loft in this North Coogee home is a revelation. Usually "loft" suggests an add-on, an extra space made by using the attic. Not here. Here we are talking about integration. The loft was designed to be a purpose-built space, in this case a home office for the owner. Its spiral staircase had to be lowered into place before the roof of the house was built. It is essentially the creation of a third storey, but with building regulations in high-density residential area, there was an issue of overviews if balconies were planned.

When it came to building their first home, the experience of living in apartments for the first few years of their married life underlined one important criterion for home owners Mark and Emma - storage space was a high priority. So Mark added a third garage just for storage and Emma added two huge internal utility rooms along with larger-than-normal main suite wardrobe, linen cupboard and pantry. "When I became pregnant and we decided it was time to build a house it was one thing we instantly focused on after all those years living in apartments with minimal storage," she said.

In today's housing market, many builders are asked to construct homes on narrow blocks. Fewer are approached by people who have the opposite - a block wider than it is long - yet they can be just as difficult to design for and build on. However, such a block need be no hindrance to creating a beautiful house, as shown by this luxurious Bicton custom built home. Built by Bellagio Homes on a 430sqm block, the home has 302sqm of floor space and a light and open feel throughout. Bellagio Homes managing director Reg Boston said the block proved a design challenge.
